Poker News - Vegas Casino hosts online casino & poker conference

July 8, 2005

Marketing experts gathered at a Las Vegas casino this week to advise online poker operators on how to promote a business that both the state and federal government consider to be illegal.

Several hundred people filled a giant ballroom at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center for a conference hosted by Bodog.com, one of the largest sports betting sites on the Internet. They recently introduced an online poker room to capitalize on the poker boom.

The conference was timed to coincide with the start of the championship event of the World Series of Poker, which has a top prize of about $7 million and smaller prizes of up to $1 million.

The World Poker Showdown is making another appearance due to last year's great success and this year just it's just in time for Christmas. This year the turnout for the Poker Tournament's Caribbean Cruise is expected to double and maybe even triple last years count. So, if you haven't made any Christmas plans yet, stop on by the website, www.worldpokershowdown.com and signup for your Christmas Vacation of a lifetime.

Poker News - Massachusetts Attorney General Concerned over Illegal Poker Games

July 4, 2005

As part of an attempt to curb illegal poker tournaments in Massachusetts, state Attorney General Thomas Reilly sent a "friendly" letter to officials all over the state reminding them of the rules and regulations pertaining to poker. Although in most cases, poker games are illegal in the state, high stakes games are often unabashedly advertised in print media, as well as online.

Charity poker tournaments are also common in Massachusetts. While not in essence illegal, charity tournaments need to follow a specific set of guidelines in order to be considered legal. These guidelines are often not met.

In his appeal to officials, Reilly first and foremost reminded addressees that poker betting is illegal. He then continued, outlining the regulations relevant to charity poker games.
