Live Poker - Cherokees: More Kinds Of Gambling Would Create Jobs

June 22, 2005

Source: Associated Press

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are requesting permission for live poker, blackjack and other games at the Harrah's Cherokee Casino.

Raliegh, NC -- The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians say that Las Vegas-style gambling at Harrah's Cherokee Casino would bring 430 new jobs with a payroll of $15.2 million.

The tribe is requesting permission for live poker, blackjack and other games at the casino.

Negotiators from the governor's office and the tribe will meet again today to discuss the request.

Principal Chief Michell Hicks has said the tribe needs to expand gambling games to compete with other Southeast casinos offering cheap airfare and accommodations.

Since the video gambling machine operation opened in 1997, the 13,000-member tribe's business brings in $155 million in profits each year. About one-half of that goes to individual tribe members. The rest pays for programs, such as education, health care and cultural resources, within the Qualla Boundary.
